Bel Lago

Week 3: January 14-20, 2023

My third visit was to Bel Lago. Having finished work early on a Thursday, I chose a winery in the County I could get to before the weekday 5:00 closing time typical of most places this time of year.

Location: 6530 South Lake Shore Drive, Cedar, MI, 49621 United States

AVA: Leelanau County (Lake Leelanau area)

Summary

Along with an extensive renovation (about 2 years ago), Bel Lago rebranded to a more modern and water-inspired design for its wine, cider, hard seltzers, and merch. The large semi-circle tasting bar looks out a huge window to sprawling views of Lake Leelanau. Everything is clean - even the way the pencils are arranged near the sunken wine chiller (I want this in my house). Many Fridays and Saturdays feature live music at happy hour.

Two Wines

Auxerrois Sparkling 2020 - 🍇🍇 Auxerrois is getting noticed as it increases in frequency and feature in the area. I don’t remember seeing a sparkling version anywhere else. I could get in trouble with this wine. Also, the graphic design on this bottle is one of my favorites, along with their Leelanau Brillante (another sparkling wine) and the Leelanau Primavera (white blend) labels.

2017 Cabernet Franc 🍇🍇 - I know Cab Franc isn’t for everyone, but I gravitate toward it for the leathery, peppery, fun factor. My wine steward asked discreet follow-up questions to make sure I knew what I was ordering. This was a deep, peppery glass that opened up as I enjoyed it.

Edit: a few weeks later I was back at Bel Lago and I had the Chardonnay/Pinot Grigio Blend. 🍇🍇🍇

Something to Love

Besides the beautiful, unseasonable sunshine, something to love here is their merch and design. A lot of the wineries have merch, most often seeming to target a bachelorette party or Boomer audience. Bel Lago’s relatively recent remodel also included overhauling the brand to a modern, fresh, water-inspired vibe that has emerged as one of the strongest wine brand designs region-wide. Building on the consistent theme of water, there's playful pops of color and texture, with many of the labels featuring beautiful metallics. Their flight trays are shaped like Leelanau County and I assume they are custom made.

This being so early in the year, I was reluctant to start a merch habit without seeing more of what else is available at other wineries. Bel Lago is about 25 minutes from my house in the winter so I could see a return trip in my future, sitting “outside” in the heated hut called “Ken’s place” with wine and pizza sporting my just-purchased Bel Lago beanie. Or is that like wearing the concert T-shirt to the concert?

I also need to mention the cork art. Last week, I was impressed with the luxury cork mural at Mari Vineyards that competed for my attention and looked to be immaculately crafted. My wine steward informed me that the mural of Leelanau County cork art on display was put together by Bel Lago staff using all Bel Lago corks!

Something to Do

EAT!! This is extremely important to note. Bel Lago has proper food, every day. This is true of almost ZERO wineries. I cannot stress enough how rare it is that you can get a proper meal at any of the wineries. They have a selection of pizzas made fresh at downtown Traverse City’s Folgarelli’s market, including several recipes custom for Bel Lago. Pizzas and soft pretzels are cooked to order at Bel Lago. If I was scheduling a wine tasting crawl I would make sure to include Bel Lago as the 3rd or 4th stop (please drink responsibly) to time with the ability to enjoy delicious, substantive bites. I didn’t order the Bel Lago Red 🍇🍇 today, but I have had it a thousand times and I would pair it with pizza in a heartbeat.

Currently, there is a promotion for “25 Fridays” where a purchase of a bottle of wine + a pizza is discounted 25% on Fridays.

Something to Hope For

On a Thursday afternoon I was able to have a long conversation with the wine steward about their harvests the last few seasons, particularly the impact on each year’s Pinot Noir. 2021 was an exciting and bountiful harvest for most of the area vineyards and Bel Lago is especially excited to see how their 2021 Pinot turned out - and now I, too, am invested and hoping for a masterful and stunning result. He also assured me that the first few weeks of January were the slowest each year, presumably while people lean into Dry January and/or try to slow down spending and drinking after their winter holidays. He expected the pace would be picking up this weekend especially with their extensive selection of live music. So I’m hoping for that too - not just at Bel Lago but everywhere.
